Answering a call for papers: abstract, proposal and selection
A call for papers invites researchers to propose a contribution (oral presentation, poster) to a conference, a seminar or a study day, or an article for a journal issue. Selection is usually based on an abstract: that is what must convince.
Choosing the right call
- Check that your work fits one of the call’s tracks, not only the general theme.
- Look at the scientific committee and the organising institution.
- Note every date: abstract submission, notification, full paper, event.
- Check accepted languages and the format (on site, online, hybrid).
Writing a convincing abstract
- A precise title that announces your contribution.
- The research question and why it matters in two or three sentences.
- Fieldwork, data or method.
- Results obtained or expected.
- An explicit link with the call’s track.
- Well-chosen keywords and strict respect of the word limit.
After acceptance
Meet the full-paper deadline and use the required template. Prepare a clear presentation within the allotted time, focused on your contribution. If proceedings or a journal issue are planned, check writing and citation rules from the start.
Common mistakes
- Sending an abstract with no clear link to the tracks.
- Exceeding the length limit or ignoring the template.
- Promising results that will not be ready.
- Submitting after the deadline.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a conference abstract be?
Each call sets its own limit (often a few hundred words). Respect it exactly.
Can I submit the same paper to several conferences?
Avoid it: present a distinct contribution each time and check the call’s originality rules, especially if proceedings are published.
