Finding a scholarship and succeeding in your application (bachelor, master, PhD, postdoc)
There are scholarships for every level of study and almost every discipline, funded by governments, universities, foundations or the European Union. The most competitive ones cover tuition, a monthly allowance and travel; others are partial. The difference often lies in how well the file is prepared.
Reading a call properly
- Who can apply: nationalities, level, age, degree, discipline.
- What is funded: tuition, allowance, travel, insurance, or only part of it.
- The timeline: opening, deadline, results, start of studies.
- Required documents and the language of the file.
- The procedure: apply to the scholarship, to the university, or both.
The typical file
- A clear, up-to-date academic CV.
- A motivation letter or study/research proposal tailored to each scholarship.
- Recommendation letters requested early from teachers who know you.
- Transcripts and diplomas, translated if needed.
- A language certificate if required.
- For PhD and postdoc: often a supervisor’s agreement or a host letter.
Tips to stand out
Show the coherence between your background, the target programme and your career plan. Tailor every letter: generic texts are spotted immediately. Have your file reviewed and submit it several days before the deadline.
Many scholarships come back every year at the same time: check recent announcements to anticipate the next call.
